The Wiccan Law:

If you mean no harm,

Do what you will!

Your Witchcraft Tools

Your tools are an extension of yourself and they're used to help you focus, visualise and channel your energies during your rituals and spells.

There are four main ceremonial tools that you'll need to start out with, each one corresponding to a different Guardian spirit of the four watchtowers:

◊ Your Wand that directs your energies through the air corresponds to the Guardian spirit of Air and the watchtower of the East.

◊ Your Athame from which the blade was yielded in the flames of the fire corresponds to the Guardian spirit of Fire and the watchtower of the South.

◊ Your Chalice that holds the water of life corresponds to the Guardian spirit of Water and the watchtower of the West.

◊ Your Pentacle where upon all of the other elements reside corresponds to the Guardian spirit of Earth and the watchtower of the North.

There are many different tools that you can and will hopefully use in your craft.

YOUR ALTAR

Your altar can be any natural surface that you place your tools on and work your spells and rituals from.

YOUR BOOK OF SHADOWS

Your book of shadows is your journal in which you write down all of your spells, rituals, notes, dreams, correspondents and meanings. You use your book of shadows to write down all of the references you wish to refer back to or pass on to future generations.

PURIFIED SALT

You'll need purified salt to sprinkle over all of your tools to cleanse and purify them of any residual energy that could and would effect your spells or rituals.

A LIGHTER

As this lighter will be used to light all of your spell candles, altar candles, quarter candles and incense it shouldn't be used for any other purpose.

YOUR WAND

Your wand is used for channelling your energies in a direction of your choice. Your wand can be made out of any natural material that you feel is right for you. Some witches like to use a traditional wooden wand and others like to use a crystal wands - you choose for yourself what feels right to you.

FIRST AND SECOND ATHAME

Your first athame (pronounced a-tham-ee) is traditionally a black-handled knife with a double-sided blade that is purely ceremonial, for casting the circle and calling forth on the Guardian spirits. Your first athame must never be used to cut anything physical within the craft.

Your second athame is traditionally a white-handled knife known as a bolline. It should always look very different to your first athame so that you don't become confused between the two as your second athame is for cutting, carving and engraving all things that are physical within the craft.

Your first and second athame must only be used for the purpose of the craft and they must never touch blood as there is no shedding of blood in the craft in any way shape or form.

YOUR CHALICE

Your chalice is used to drink a toast to the Moon Goddess and the Sun God within the circle and should never be used for any other reason or time.

YOUR PENTACLE

Your pentacle is traditionally your focal point placed in the centre of your altar, upon which you can place your tools for consecration (cleansing and purifying) or the items that you will be using during your spell or ritual if you choose.

YOUR CAULDRON

Your cauldron is a symbol of the Moon Goddess's fertile womb, in which you'll make potions or safely contain a small fire when you're burning items from a spell or ritual.

YOUR CENSER

Your censer is an incense burner that's used during your spell or ritual to contain or hold your incense, so choose a censer that you feel is appropriate for the incense you like to use.

YOUR BELL

You ring your bell three times to symbolise the beginning and end of your spell or ritual.

YOUR BROOM OR BESOM

You use your broom to clean the area in which you'll be doing your spell or ritual. It symbolises the sweeping away of old, stagnant negative energies.

A WATERPROOF BOWL CONTAINING EARTH

When you're making offerings of the bread and wine to the Moon Goddess and the Sun God, they should be placed in to this bowl of earth.

A BOWL OF SHELLS IN SALT WATER

Your bowl should be placed in the West quarter of your circle and used as an offering to the Guardian spirit of Water during your spell or ritual.

YOUR BATH CANDLE

This white candle should only be lit during your cleansing and purifying bath to call forth on the energies of the Moon Goddess and the Sun God. But remember this candle may be reused for the same purpose over and over, but only if it is for the same person. Also for safety reasons, you should always use a candle holder or candle plate.

YOUR ALTAR CANDLES

The first altar candle is used to call forth on the Moon Goddess. It should be placed to the left on your altar. This candle may be reused for the same purpose. The second altar candle is used to call forth on the Sun God. It should be placed to the right on your altar. This candle may be reused for the same purpose.

THE FOUR QUARTER OR ELEMENTAL CANDLES

The four quarter candles represent the four Guardian spirits of the watchtowers and should be placed in the relevant quarters. These candles may be reused for the same purpose. A yellow candle should be placed in the East to represent the Guardian spirit of Air. A red candle should be placed in the South to represent the Guardian spirit of Fire. A blue candle should be placed in the West to represent the Guardian spirit of Water. A green candle should be placed in the North to represent the Guardian spirit of Earth.

Important: for safety reasons please use candle holders, preferably spiked ones.

YOUR SPELL CANDLE COLOURS

Choose your spell candle colours carefully, making sure they represent the energies you wish to work with. This candle or candles may not be used again.

YOUR RITUAL CANDLE COLOURS

Choose your ritual candle colours carefully making sure they represent the energies you wish to work with. This candle or candles may not be used again.

YOUR SNUFFER

You should always use your snuffer to snuff out all your candles.

YOUR GOWN OR ROBE

Your ceremonial gown or robe should only be worn after a cleansing and purifying bath and during a spell or ritual.

TOOL BOX

Although it is not necessary to buy a tool box, it’s always a good idea to have a safe place to store your tools where little fingers can’t get to them and big fingers can’t touch them!

BREAD AND WINE

The bread and wine should be used as offerings to the Moon Goddess and the Sun God during your spell or ritual. Please remember that you can use fruit juice if you prefer.

RULES FOR YOUR TOOLS

You should always consecrate all of your tools (cleanses and purifies.)

You should never use the tools of another.

You should never touch the tools of another without their permission.

Always keep your tools in a safe place. If you are going to buy your tools you should always buy good quality tools, that way they can be passed down from generation to generation. (Buy cheap buy twice.)
